Lessons of Operation Torch

Abstract

This document is a compilation of reports from commanders and task forces who participated in Operation Torch in North Africa during World War II. The reports discuss the future planning and execution of any similar operations in terms of security measures, the preparation of necessary data (e.g., maps, aerial photographs), and organization; individual and organizational equipment; basic and special training of all individuals and units; training and equipment for combined operations or other special operations; and cooperation between Army, Navy, and Air Force. Each commander provides his opinion of mistakes and omissions that were committed during the operation as well as suggested corrections. Specific topics addressed include air support, amphibious operations, armored units, battalion landing teams, beach organization, chemical warfare, civil affairs, command posts, communications, embarkation operations, engineer corps, field artillery units, intelligence, maps, medical services, ordnance, parachute troops, prisoners of war, provost marshall, quartermaster, rations, shipping for assault units, signal corps, and transportation operations. Reports are provided from the following Allied Forces: Eastern Assault Force; Center Task Force, including 1st Infantry Division, 53rd Signal Battalion, 19th Engineers, and 48th Surgical Hospital; Western Task Force, including First Provisional Brigade, 2d Armored Division, and Moroccan Composite Wing; and the Mediterranean Base Section.
