Report of Surrender and Occupation of Japan
Abstract
To present a comprehensive account of the surrender and occupation of Japanese-held territory as a whole, this report covers the period from cessation of hostilities on 15 August to the end of major naval participation in the occupation of such Japanese possessions. The monthly Reports of Operations in Pacific Ocean Areas were discontinued with August 1945, which covered operations up to the cessation of hostilities, with some brief mention of subsequent events to the end of the month. Operations after 15 August are, however, treated in greater detail herein, for the purpose of clarifying the situation existing prior to formal surrender ceremonies on 2 September 1945. As explained in Annex B, this publication constitutes the final analytical report by Cincpac-Cincpoa covering World War II operations in the Pacific Ocean Areas. Following an introductory section, Part II, The Surrender and Occupation of Japanese Home Islands, contains the following subsections: The Occupation of Central Honshu; Occupation of Hokkaido and North Honshu; Occupation of Kyushu, Shikoku, and Southern Honshu; and Mine Force Operations. Appendix I to Part II discusses the Political and Military Background of and Negotiations for the Surrender and Occupation of Japan. Appendix II to Part II discusses Ships Present in Tokyo Bay during the Surrender Ceremonies. Part III focuses on The Surrender and Occupation of Korea. Part IV examines The Liberation of Japanese-Held China. Part V describes the Surrender and Development of Outlying Japanese-Held Islands in the Pacific Ocean Areas. Annex A discusses Typhoon "Louise" -- The 9 October Storm at Okinawa. Appendix III describes the Typhoon Damage at Okinawa. Appendix IV discusses Major Administrative and Command Changes from September through December 1945. Annex B discusses the Discontinuance of Analytical Reports. Plates contain the Ultimate Zones of Responsibility for Naval Operations, Minefields, and U.S. Offensive Mining in Pacific Ocean Area7
