2003 Survey of Retired Military: Tabulations of Responses

Abstract

This report contains tabulations of responses from the 2003 Survey of Retired Military (2003 SRM), conducted August 19 to October 8, 2003. This introduction (1) summarizes the survey content, (2) defines the total population surveyed and the subgroups used in tabulations of responses, (3) summarizes the survey methodology, and (4) provides details on how to use the tabulations. The tabulations and a copy of the survey items follow this introduction. Survey Content Topics covered in the survey primarily addressed the post-service employment and earnings experiences of military retirees, with emphasis on the effects of combat- related disabilities. Questions were also included on the quality of civilian and military life, reasons for retirement, choice of retirement location, medical care, and the use and cost of commissaries and exchanges. The survey was subdivided into questions covering the following seven topic areas: 1. Military Retirement-Comparison of civilian and military standards of living, satisfaction with civilian life, factors influencing retirement decisions, value of military experience to post-retirement job experiences, and recommendation of military as a career for youth. 2. Employment Situation in 2002-Employment and labor force status in 2002, weeks and hours worked, occupation, industry, and wage and salary income from primary job in 2002. 3. Family and Household Information-Marital status, effect of military service on spouse's career, education of spouse, employment and labor force experience of spouse, and income of retiree and spouse by source. 4. Use of Commissary and Exchange-Accessibility and use of commissaries and exchanges, and monthly expenditures. 5. Combat-Related Disabilities. 6. Use and Cost of Medical Services 7. Retiree Demographic Information.
