Sitting Bull: Great Commander and Strategist-or Savage? A View Through the Clausewitzian Prism

Abstract

Carl von Clausewitz, the 19th century German military theorist, was most likely uninformed about the American Indians and their struggle to retain their independence and he was definitely not familiar with Sitting Bull as this Indian chief bad not yet been born Clansewitz would have considered these Indians-and Sitting Bull- savages, and, based on the above excerpted quotation from On War, incapable of producing a great commander Although not explicitly stated, Clausewitz would also conclude that savages, given their lack of necessary intellectual powers were also incapable of producing a military strategist.
