Brazil and the United States: Security Issues for the Twenty-First Century

Abstract

As a strongly democratic developing nation, exercising great influence on its South American neighbors and increasing influence in the international arena, Brazil is one of the most geostrategically important countries in South America. It is the third largest country in the American hemisphere with an enormous wealth of natural resources, including the world's largest rainforest, and has the potential to become a global economic powerhouse. To achieve this, Brazil must overcome the challenges posed by its rapidly growing population, and provide for environmentally friendly, sustainable development, while avoiding economic and political instabilities. Given the enormous potential of Brazil as a constructive participant in the global community, it is clearly in the United States interest to help them succeed.
