UXO Target Detection and Discrimination with Electromagnetic Differential Illumination

Abstract

The intent of this project was to address UXO detection in complex and hostile soil environments such as Kaho'olawe Island, Hawaii and the Waikoloa Manoeuver Area, Hawaii. Geophysics target signatures recorded from electromagnetic induction (EMI) sensors, such as the Geonics EM61, contain extreme levels of background noise caused in large part by magnetically permeable soils.
