Strategic Potential of the Late Ottoman Empire
Abstract
Modern Turkey is potentially the center of gravity of United States National Security Strategy in Central Asia, the Caucasus, and Middle East. As such, it is critical that the United States reengages Turkey bilaterally and through NATO to strengthen the entire region with democracy and economic reforms. A U.S. miscalculation of Turkey's potential and failure to address their internal problems could result in the missed opportunities to shape a secure and prosperous region, and indirectly set conditions for a stable Middle East. This paper will analyze the strategic context of Turkey in relation to its diverse neighbors as well as national interests, threats, and opportunities as perceived by the Turks. The paper will conclude with a broad recommendation of a U.S. strategy to aid Turkey with internal reforms and regional security objectives.
