Characterization of the Steady Wave Field of the High Speed Transom Stern Ship - Model 5365 Hull Form

Abstract

A model of the R/V Athena hull form (Model 5365) was towed on Carriage 1 of the David Taylor Model Basin at the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWCCD.) The R/V Athena is a converted PG-84 Asheville-class patrol gunboat. Measurements of the free-surface were made using various instrumentation systems, including conductivity probes in the stern region, Quantitative Visualization in the bow and shoulder wave region, and wave capacitance probes for stationary measurements of the transverse wave field. Video cameras were also used to qualitatively characterize the wave field and compare it with video of the full-scale vessel.
