Report on a System Architecture Workshop

Abstract

System architecture has emerged as one of the most important areas of research for the Air Force. Many past system failures or problems can be attributed to improper system architecture or no architecture at all. It is extremely critical to identify important research topics in this area so that researchers and funding agencies can focus their attention on these topics to make research investments more effective, and to produce the research results that will benefit the Air Force most. This report summarizes the results of a system architecture workshop that was held in New Orleans in January 2004. It identifies a variety of research issues and topics in system architecture. The authors believe that investments in these research topics will greatly enhance the Air Force's capabilities in acquisition, design, and implementation of future generations of systems.
