Implications of Conation for Design: Presentation/Briefing
Abstract
"Conation" is defined as "the aspect of mental processes or behavior directed toward action or change and including impulse, desire, volition, and striving." "Conation connects cognition and emotion (affect) to action; used by an individual when he/she strives to carry out purposeful action." The synonyms of conation are ambition, dedication, desire, desire to achieve, doggedness, drive, focus, impulse, intent, motivation, persistence, striving, vocation, volition, and will. According to the author, the mind consists of three processes: conation, affect, and cognition. This presentation contains definitions of conation, synonyms, a provisional taxonomy of conative constructs, a brief history of conation (i.e., in terms of the philosophers, psychologists, and scientists who discovered it), modern applications of conation (e.g., management consulting, education, and mental health), implications of conation for design, and a description of conative task analysis.
