Military Knowledge Study: Measuring Military Knowledge and Examining Its Relationship With Youth Propensity

Abstract

Three types of knowledge were investigated in this study: subjective, instrumental and symbolic knowledge. Measuring these three distinct types of military knowledge provided rich and complete information on youth knowledge of the military. This information can be useful in developing advertising campaigns to target misperceptions or strengthen connections between the military and images that promote propensity and enlistment. Examining the relationship of military knowledge with youth propensity to join the military is important because attitudinal research suggests that individuals who are more familiar with an organization report being more attracted to that organization and respond more favorably to recruiting practices.
