Double Optical-Gamma Resonance

Abstract

This report results from a contract tasking Russian Research Center Kurchatov Institute as follows: This experiment is directed toward the observation of a perturbation of the Mossbauer spectrum of a nuclear isomer through the influence of an intense optical-frequency field. It could lead to laser control of nuclear transitions and would open up a new area of research. Firstly, laser-Mossbauer spectroscopy would offer a vast range of applications starting from very fundamental, such as the first direct measurement of nuclear radii in excited atoms. Secondly, it will be very useful for practical applications, such as characterization of optical materials heretofore resistant to Mossbauer probing, or the studies of various dopants and their environment in different crystalline hosts.
