A Novel Pulse Compression Scheme Based on Minimum Mean-Square Error Reiteration

Abstract

This paper presents an alternative approach to pulse compression that is based upon iterative Minimum Mean- Square Error (MMSE) estimation. It is similar to the well known least squares (LS) approach but does not suffer from the adverse effects caused by scatterers closer than some nominal range. This results in a more robust estimate of the radar returns while maintaining nearly the same sidelobe level. Furthermore, the proposed pulse compression scheme is highly parallelizable in range and therefore can be computed efficiently.
