Techniques for Intelligence Analysis of Networks

Abstract

This presentation, consisting of 11 briefing charts, makes the following points: (1) "complex networks" have exploitable properties; (2) these exploitable properties have military relevance (e.g., Sense and Respond Logistics (OSD-FT); (3) there are significant intelligence analysis manifestations of these properties; and (4) a more satisfying theory of Networked Competition than currently exists for NCW/NCO is emerging from this research. The author concludes that Structural Analysis is a useful tool for understanding networks and is a strong complement to traditional methods. The presentation provides recommendations for how to attack or influence a target network. Most of the examples are from non-military contexts, but there is a need for military-specific research.
