Clinically Practical Magnetic Resonance Protocol for Improved Specificity in Breast Cancer Diagnosis
Abstract
The purpose of this postdoctoral training award is for the Principal Investigator (PI) to be trained in every aspect of conducting a research breast cancer study in a clinical setting. The study aims to improve specificity of breast cancer detection by using a combined Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)/Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS) protocol. In the past year, the first year of this award, the PI has laid the ground work for patient recruitment and data collection. The PI has constructed a breast phantom, which consists of vegetable shortening and ping pong balls filled with choline chloride solutions; transferred from the proposed 1.5T Marconi scanner to a 1.5T Philips scanner; performed sequence testing and quality control using the phantom; drafted the IRB protocol, consent form, and advertising pamphlet; received training in MRI/MRS scanning, Dynamic Contrast Enhanced MRI, perfusion MRI, data acquisition and data analysis, correlation of MR data and biopsy results, and patient recruitment; and established working relationships with the radiologists and surgeons involved in the study. Relevant preliminary data were published in the journal "Radiology" in August 2004 and presented at the Era of Hope 2005 -- Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Meeting in Philadelphia, PA. Data collection from human subjects will commence upon approval of the IRB protocol by the Army Surgeon General's Human Subjects Research Review Board.
