ESSENCE (Electronic Surveillance System for the Early Notification of Community-Based Epidemics): (1) A U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) system; (2) Designed to detect infectious disease outbreaks; (3) Serves military active duty members, their beneficiaries, and retirees; (4) Uses mainly ICD-9-CM codes from outpatient visits; (5) Delay of 1-4 days from patient visit date to data capture date by ESSENCE.
