ESSENCE: An Electronic Surveillance System for the Early Notification of Community-based Epidemics. MONITORING HEALTH CARE DATA: (1) ~800 military treatment facilities since Sept 2001; (2) 12 major metropolitan civilian areas. EVALUATING DATA SOURCES: (1) Civilian physician visits; (2) OTC pharmacy sales; (3) Prescription sales; (4) Nurse hotline/EMS data; (5) Absentee rate data. Developing & implementing alerting algorithms.
