Abstract

This is a report on the proceedings of a seminar on standards for the American Marine Industry held in Castine, Maine on June 7th through 9, 1976. It was attended by representatives from shipyards who have expressed an interest in the standards and individuals representing various standards organizations and regulatory bodies. The report is organized into two parts as was the seminar itself. The first part consists of a summary of each of the presentations which were used to provide background information on the development and use of standards. The second part includes the results from three working groups investigating the following questions; (1) What kind of shipbuilding standards are needed, (2) How should the shipbuilding industry develop and process standards, and (3) How should the shipbuilding industry make use of standards? There is a summary of the results of the working groups and a program for future development which reflects the guidance and direction obtained from those attending the seminar.
