Abstract
The success of the National Shipbuilding Research Program is attributable in no small measure to the unique process of industry-government involvement in the planning and implementation of projects. As part of that process, a conference and workshop took place in Atlanta, Georgia, January 18-21, 1981, to explore industry and MarAd cooperation in a program area new to U. S. shipbuilding engineering/production integration. The goal of the conference was to facilitate industry thinking in the formulation of engineering/production integration research projects under the auspices of the Ship Production Committee of SNAME (with the sponsorship of MarAd's National Shipbuilding Research Program). A second goal was to establish an industry advisory panel (under the Ship Production Committee) to provide continuous guidance on the topic. Newport News Shipbuilding, acting as lead yard, was asked to organize the conference. The purposes of the conference were twofold: (1) to inform the U. S. shipbuilding industry of engineering/ production integration methods and techniques as applied in foreign yards and in other U. S. industries, and (2) to provide a forum for a discussion of the applicability of such innovations to U. S. shipbuilding.
