Smart Structures and Wavelet Based System Identification

Abstract

In this thesis we study the problem of modeling and control of vibrations of a flexible structure. Different approaches have been considered for fitting a finite dimensional model to the infinite dimensional system. In particular we used a discretization method to model the cantilever beam and using this model and taking into account the saturation of input signal, we have designed and analyzed a nonlinear controller. An observer based version of the controller has also been implemented and shown to be stable. A simulation program is written for solving the governing partial differential equation for a cantilever beam and the effect of passive damping due to viscous and internal damping has been considered to get a more realistic simulation. Finally a general algorithm for nonparametric system identification is developed and implemented and is used to obtain an approximation to the transfer function matrix of a smart structure. The results are compared with conventional methods.
