Innovative Concepts for SSA Applications

Abstract

In the Advanced Detectors Research Group of the Air Force Research Laboratory's Space Vehicles Directorate, we explore innovative ways to enhance existing detector technologies and to develop new detector capabilities for future space-based missions, such as space sensing and situational awareness. Space-based sensing needs will be met with the employment of state-of-the-art optoelectronic and photonic techniques that yield high sensitivity, reconfigurable options, high speed, light weight, low power, and radiation hardness. We present some ideas we are presently exploring that address these aspects: (1) amplification or enhancement of weak signals, (2) continuous tuning of the peak wavelength of a detector response by applying an electric field, and (3) monolithic solid-state cooling of a detector using optical refrigeration.
