The National Shipbuilding Research Program. Multi-Skilled, Self-Managing Work Teams in a Zone-Construction Environment

Abstract

This report will document National Steel and Shipbuilding Company's NASSCO's efforts to develop self managing multi-skilled work team. The objective of this effort was to develop and test a new production work force organization corresponding to the technical requirements of product-oriented work breakdown structure, otherwise known as zone construction. NASSCO otherwise known as zone construction. NASSCO was awarded a grant from the Human Resource Innovation Panel (SP5) of the SNAME Ship Production Committee in order to explore the benefits of this type of work force organization.
