Abstract

The U.S. shipbuilding indusny is at a crossroads. If productivity is not increased only those ships most vital to the nation's defense will be huih in U.S. shipyards. The rest %vill be forfeited to foreign con%petition as CC)5t quality and consti1iction tin%e becon%e the key deten%inants in contract a%%ards. The goal of this project %vas to shonen these learning cur%es. As Dr. Han% points out concepts are only a beginning. Tools for {n%plen%entation of group technology %%ork methods are essem%tial for ftirther impro%%ement of the indusny. Tools make technology more accessible. This manual and the classification and coding system contained herein %%ere de%%loped as tools to make group technology more accessible to the U.S. shipbuilding industry.
