Design and Development of Reliable Gun-Fired Structures
Abstract
Precision munitions must be strong enough to exit the gun tube without damage to the gun, safe enough for the soldiers near the gun, accurate, and reliable. Precision munitions carry computers, circuit boards, guidance and control systems, heat sensors, infrared sensors, safety and arming devices, and payloads. Gun-fired systems are expected to survive high g-forces in the gun tube and then guide the weapon to target. Precision munitions routinely meet safety and accuracy requirements. The reliability requirements have been more difficult to meet. This paper describes methods to improve structural reliability. The process includes uncertainties at all levels of the development process. The process should lead to more reliable weapon systems and shorter time to field a system to the soldier.
