Federated Architecture in the Defense Business Transformation. Selected IDA Papers and Briefings

Abstract

DoD is engaged in transforming itself in multiple domains to better perform its mission in the word as it exists today by utilizing the most modern technology. This includes transforming and modernizing the Business Mission area to ensure that the right capabilities, resources and materiel are rapidly delivered to our warfighters. This effort produced a Business Enterprise Architecture (BEA) and an associated Enterprise Transition Plan (ETP), as the first step in satisfying requirements imposed on DoD in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). The success of the Defense business transformation relies on instantiating effective programs by the Services and Agencies, aligned with the BEA and other DoD and federal policies. For over two years IDA has been encouraging a federated approach to facilitate this effort. This approach is now broadly accepted as appropriate to facilitate the work needed for the Defense business transformation. This document contains a collection of papers and briefings that IDA has used to assist in adapting this approach. The purpose is to present a time-ordered compilation that illustrates the development and maturation of the approach over the two year span covered.
