Performance Analysis of Poll-Based Retransmission Schemes
Abstract
Many connections require that the source retransmit any data message not correctly delivered to the destination. This paper focuses on schemes that rely on a polling mechanism to trigger the retransmissions. A delay criterion is presented that can be used to gain insight into the performance of general retransmission schemes; this criterion is then used to evaluate poll-based schemes. It is shown that the biggest drawback of poll-based schemes is that they potentially can result in large retransmission delay when bursts of messages are lost. Their main advantage is that if data arrives in-sequence at the receiver, then unnecessary retransmissions can be eliminated. Thus, poll-based schemes are best suited for systems where bandwidth efficiency is of greater concern than low delay.
