Using Observer Ratings to Assess Situational Awareness in Tactical Air Environments
Abstract
This paper summarizes the results of initial attempts to measure situation awareness (SA) in operational fighter squadrons and in multiship air combat simulations. It also discusses the general problem of using subjective measures to assess performance. Initial efforts focused on three issues: (a) the definition of SA, (b) the degree to which pilots can reliably judge their fellow pilots in terms of SA, and (c) whether or not there is a relationship between such judgements and mission performance. This paper was also published in the conference proceedings.
