San Francisco Deep Ocean Dredged Material Disposal Site (SF-DODS) Monitoring Program. Physical, Chemical, and Benthic Community Monitoring
Abstract
This report summarizes the analysis of physical, chemical, and benthic community September 2002 sampling of the San Francisco Deep Ocean Disposal Site. Vertical profile images of the sea floor were taken to measure dredge material deposited within and adjacent to the SF-DODS boundary. Sea floor sediment samples were taken and analyzed for an EPA list of hazardous chemicals. Sea floor samples were also analyzed for benthic community species and compared with species present in baseline benthic community samples taken at SF-DODS prior to dredge material disposal. Dredge material accumulation for 2002 did not exceed the established threshold of 5 cm outside of the SF-DODS perimeter. Concentrations of screened hazardous chemicals were within acceptable EPA limits for the disposal site. No adverse impacts to the benthic community were detected.
