Abstract

This grant funded expenses related to the fourth Safar Symposium held at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine on June 28, 2006. This symposium is held each year in honor of the late Dr. Peter Safar, pioneer of CPR, resuscitation, critical care, and disaster medicine. The symposium focused on two aspects of medical research of importance to the field of resuscitation medicine in its broadest scope, namely, a morning session entitled Advances in Resuscitation Medicine Mitochondda in Resuscitation" and an afternoon session on Advances in Human Simulation Education." The symposium featured 10 speakers and was well received by approximately 200 attendees, including physicians, scientists, medical residents, fellows, and students, nurses, paramedics, and other allied professionals in the field of resuscitation medicine. The symposium had considerable military relevance specifically in the area of combat casualty resuscitation, head injury, blast injury, shock simulation, and education among other topics.
