An Industry Analysis of the MBA Market and the Competitive Positioning of the GSBPP

Abstract

The purpose of this Master of Eusiness Administration (MBA) project is to perform an industry analysis of the MBA market utilizing the principles of industry analysis noted in Michael Porter's "Five Forces Analysis" model. The intent of this project is to create an awareness of how these competitive forces: shape the MBA market, define the relationships hetween stakeholders within the market, and affect the overall attractiveness of the MBA market. The goal is to provide GSBPP policy makers a tool to assist in the understanding of the industry environment and the development of a sustainahie competitive position for the GSBPP. The authors helieve the GSBPP can henefit greatly from this knowledge. The starting point of this project was to perform a comprehensive search and analysis of secondary resources for data concerning the nature of competition, incentives of huyers (students and employers/recruiters) and sellers (faculty), and threat of suhstitutes within the MBA market. It is noted that the nature of competition is a critical force affecting the MBA market, as an MBA program 5 reputation drives almost all aspects of its strategy. Full understanding of these market forces should help enahie the GSBPP to aptly compete in this market.
