Combat Ration Network for Technology Implementation. Universal Benchtop Package Tester

Abstract

The objective was to develop a bench-top unit to test for leaks and residual gas in polymeric trays and MRE pouches. A leased unit was tested to validate design and software changes. Hardware and software improvements reduced operational complexity. The design goal was to measure residual gas in retorted trays on average to +or- 10% of the destructive methods. Detection of 300 micron leaks with 80%+ effectiveness with less than 0.5% false positives was also defined and met. Samples of production trays were tested. A small outlying dataset had gas significantly below the 250cc limit. The unit was demonstrated to measure gas within -0%+20% of destruct measurements by a producer. As a QA tool, this represents an adequate means to maintain process control without excessive product waste.
