Very High Resolution SAR and Multichannel SAR/MTI

Abstract

SAR is widely used today in earth observation and is a potential means for military surveillance. However, systems only operating in the basic SAR mode will be superseded by new developments which fulfill much more user demands. Highest resolution in flight direction combined with a far range operation cannot be reached in strip mode. The spotlight mode has to be implemented demanding for special capabilities of the hardware and the data processing chain. To achieve a fine resolution in range direction, transmit signals with very large bandwidth have to be used. Technological imitations force the developers to implement new strategies to acquire the necessary bandwidth. Multichannel SAR systems offer great advantages compared to the conventional ones. Depending on the antenna configuration such systems allow to measure the height of image pixels or to detect moving objects in the illuminated scene.
