Environmental, Health, and Safety Research Needs for Engineered Nanoscale Materials

Abstract

The primary purpose of this document is to identify for the Federal Government environmental, health, and safety (EHS) research and information needs related to understanding and management of potential risks of engineered nanoscale materials that may be used, for example, in commercial or consumer products, medical treatments, environmental applications, and research. This document will be used by the National Science and Technology Council's (NSTC's) Nanoscale Science, Engineering, and Technology (NSET) Subcommittee and Federal agencies to inform and guide research programs. It also communicates to various nongovernment stakeholders approaches for obtaining the knowledge and understanding necessary to enable risk assessment and management of nanomaterials. Industry producers and users of nanomaterials, for example, may use this document to inform their own research, risk assessment, and risk management activities. The document was prepared by members of NSET's Nanotechnology Environmental and Health Implications (NEHI) Working Group, with assistance from National Nanotechnology Coordination Office (NNCO) staff members. The contextual framework for this document, including an overview of nanotechnology and risk characterization, is provided in Chapter 1. Chapters 2-6 each address specific areas of scientific investigation for assessing and managing potential EHS risks of nanomaterials. These chapters focus on the following scientific areas: Instrumentation, Metrology, and Analytical Methods; Nanomaterials and Human Health; Nanomaterials and the Environment; Health and Environmental Surveillance; and Risk Management Methods.
