Generation Challenges for Army Transformation

Abstract

Three different generations serving simultaneously in the ranks is a challenge the United States Army faces as it adjusts to the effects of transformation. This paper describes the differences among three distinct generations of soldiers who are serving simultaneously: Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Generation Y. The paper examines the attitudes and perceptions of Generation Y to determine what might inspire this group to serve in the U.S. Army, and also identifies obstacles that are discouraging junior officers from serving. He concludes with recommendations that challenge alleged obstacles, encourage recruitment of Generation Y, and promote continued Officer Service.
