Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine

Abstract

During combat, blunt penetrating and blast injuries may lead to soft and solid tissue and organ damage. In turn, trauma and its subsequent infection and inflammation all lead to tissue loss. The challenge is to replace those tissues and organs. To this end, regenerative medicine brings together the areas of biosurgery, cell therapies, tissue engineering and artificial and biohybrid organs. Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine conducts research in the areas of growth factor biology, cell differentiation, molecular mechanisms, and cell-matrix interactions.
