Survey of Wastewater Discharge, Eielson AFB, Alaska, EHL(K) 73-24

Abstract

This report contains the results of a wastewater survey at Eielson AFB, Alaska, conducted by the USAF Environmental Health Laboratories, Kelly AFB, Texas and McClellan AFB, CA, between 22 and 27 June 1973. Most wastewaters generated on Eielson AFB are discharged to the Base sanitary sewage system for treatment, with subsequent discharge to Garrison Slough. Current treatment consists of primary sedimentation and sludge digestion. The effluent from the treatment plant is not chlorinated prior to discharge. A secondary sewage treatment system is being constructed utilizing an aerated lagoon. This system will be equipped with the necessary equipment to chlorinate the effluent prior to discharge. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed standards to be met by secondary treatment. These standards are included in this report. There are some untreated washrack wastes entering Garrison Slough. These and other untreated wastes identified and included in this report should be discharged to the sanitary sewage system. Performance specifications required by AFR 19-1 are included in this report for the sanitary sewage treatment plant.
