Reconfigurable Tactical Operations Simulator (RTOS) Operational Demonstration: Post Deployment Build 6 Follow Up

Abstract

The current report is a follow-up to ARL-SR-0156 which describes the operational demonstration of a part-task, less-than-full fidelity simulator in an operational Patriot unit. The specific objectives of this follow up assessment were to (1) determine whether the Reconfigurable Tactical Operations Simulator (RTOS) operating first with a Post-Deployment Build (PDB) 5.5.2 emulation and then a PDB-6-like model could be used to train PDB-6 fire control crews (both Information and Coordination Central [ICC] and Engagement Control Station [ECS] on selected tasks); and (2) begin formulating a list of changes that would be required for the RTOS to adequately support PDB-6 fire control crew training. Results from the follow-up assessment indicated that the current RTOS model has limited PDB-6 functionality and should not be used to support PDB-6- specific training in Patriot units. This conclusion does not mean that the current RTOS does not have training value for PDB- 6 equipped units. Follow Up participants expressed a view that the current RTOS does have training value in PDB-6 equipped units to train fire control personnel from entry up through gunnery table IV. A list of modifications to the RTOS to make it usable for PDB-6 specific training in Patriot units also resulted from the Follow Up exercise.
