Proceedings of the ARO Planning Workshop on Embedded Systems and Network Security Held in Raleigh, North Carolina on February 22-23, 2007

Abstract

Embedded systems and networks are used heavily in critical defense applications. Malicious or accidental failures in embedded systems can have dire consequences. The integrity of embedded software infrastructures, such as configuration and code, is of utmost importance. The autonomous nature of embedded systems also poses new challenges in the context of system integrity. The purpose of this workshop was for a group of experts to present the state of art of embedded system and network security. The research areas covered under the workshop included 1. Adversary models, 2. Languages and Software Engineering, 3. Software Security, 4. Hardware Security, 5. Robust Distributed Systems, and 6. Wireless Sensor networks, MANET and Cellular Security. The following sections of this report give the position papers/statements contributed by the workshop participants, the slides used during the workshop, the summary of each session, and the research challenges identified by the workshop participants in embedded systems and network security.
