It has made limited progress in economic and political reforms, and many observers criticize its human rights record. This report discusses U.S. policy and assistance. Basic facts and biographical information are provided. The report may be updated. Related products include CRS Issue Brief IB93108, "Central Asia," which is updated regularly.
