On-Site Incineration: Overview of Superfund Operating Experience

Abstract

Incineration has been used as a remedy at more than 40 Superfund sites. Information on cost and performance of incineration can be valuable to remedial project managers (RPMs) and other decision makers responsible for future site cleanup projects. To date, reports on cost and performance for this technology have been limited. Fifteen case studies were prepared to obtain additional data on operating experience for completed projects. These studies are published under a separate cover. This report was prepared: 1) to summarize the case studies, 2) to provide technology descriptions under one cover, and 3) to make general observations based on individual applications. It includes an overview of incineration design, air pollution control systems, and regulatory requirements. General information on the selected sites is provided in Table 1. All tables cited in the text are presented at this end of this report.
