Operational Ocean Modelling with the Harvard Ocean Prediction System

Abstract

In close collaboration with a team of Massachusetts Institute of Technology an ocean forecasting system has been made available within TNO. The Harvard Ocean Prediction System (HOPS) is a large numerical ocean simulation system which produces forecasts for the maritime environment. This report documents the process of large scale ocean modelling and explains the choices that have to be made during this process. The consequences of these choices are discussed, as well as the operational uses of the model outcome.
