Guide to the Impact Behaviour of Aircraft Instrument Panel Lamp Filaments

Abstract

In the event of an aircraft experiencing an impact that causes significant structural damage, the examination of lamp filaments form the instrument panel warning and caution system has provided investigators with valuable information regarding the status of the aircraft systems at the time of impact. This report presents the results of lamp tests conducted at medium to high g impact and covers the filament condition prior and post impact, on new and aged filaments. It also provides guidelines for determining if a lamp was active just prior to the impact.
