Blue Darts: Award-Winning OP-EDS

Abstract

Gen Stephen R. Lorenz, former Air University (AU) commander and now commander of Air Education and Training Command, initiated this project to challenge AU's faculty and students to connect with the wider academic, professional, and broader communities. The culmination of this initiative is this collection of award-winning "Blue Darts." A Blue Dart is the name AU has given to what is commonly called an op-ed, or a timely, provocative essay that advances an opinion or challenges the reader's thought. These op-eds (some of which are derived from larger research studies) offer a unique perspective on national or global concerns. Public Affairs makes Blue Darts available to the news media and other outside agencies. The following 27 op-eds were selected from 341 Blue Darts written by top AU students and faculty, as well as by outside experts. A committee of 73 AU faculty members reviewed the submissions from March through December 2007 and then selected the award winners based on selected criteria. Faculty members were from the Air Command and Staff College, Air Force Doctrine Development and Education Center, Air Force Institute for Advanced Distributed Learning, Air Force Officer Accession and Training Schools, Air War College, Ira C. Eaker College for Professional Development, School of Advanced Air and Space Studies, and Squadron Officer College. provoking. This compendium reflects AU's overarching goal to be the intellectual and leadership center of the Air Force via teaching, scholarship, and outreach.
