JSOU and NDIA SO/LIC Division Essays (2007)

Abstract

The Joint Special Operations University (JSOU) partnered with the Special Operations and Low Intensity Conflict (SO/LIC) Division of the National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA) in sponsoring the annual essay contest. The first-place winner is recognized each year at the NDIA SO/LIC Symposium in mid-February, and the prize is $1,000 cash. The runner-up receives $500. The competition is open to resident and nonresident students attending Professional Military Education (PME) institutions and has produced outstanding works on special operations issues. These essays provide insights on what our PME students see as priority national security issues today affecting special operations. The essays are as follows: "Cyber-Herding: Exploiting Islamic Extremists' Use of the Internet," by David B. Moon; "Limitations of the National Defense Union: Why the DoD-DI Relationship is Best Left at Home," by Joe McGraw; "Conventionalization of Special Operations and Its Impact on Innovation," by Michael P. Sullivan; "Counterinsurgency Strategy in Afghanistan, Using United States Special Forces to Remain Village Focused," by Matthew D. Coburn; "Conventional Forces Intelligence Integration with Special Operations Forces in Support of Operation Iraqi Freedom III," by Ronald Beadenkopf; "Educating Broadly: Rethinking Nontraditional Special Operations Forces Education," by Guillaume N. Beaurperes; "International Crisis Information Network," by Basil J. Catanzaro and Brian S. Horine; "Radical Islam's Legitimization of Suicide Terror," by Duane L. Gordin; "Using Money for Counterinsurgency Operations," by Leonard J. DeFrancisci; "Enabling Economic Stabilization," by Michael Zinno.
