A Megawatt Power Module for Ship Service - Supplement. Volume 1: Program Technical Report

Abstract

This report is Volume 1 of a three volume Final Report on ONR Contract N00014-07-C-0361. Activities documented in this report were performed as a supplement to ONR Grant N00014-06-01-0886. The two programs address the use of energy storage and high speed power generation to reduce fuel consumption of DDG51 Arleigh Burke class ship service generation system by improving efficiency and permitting safe operation on one gas turbine generator set. In the event of turbine failure, the energy storage unit will provide power for critical loads until a second gas turbine generator set can be brought online. Volume 1 of the Final Report documents trade studies and preliminary design of the energy storage flywheel and associated motor/generator, the final system topology, high fidelity modeling and simulation activities, and top level platform integration issues. Volume 2 of the Final Report is a User's Manual for the high fidelity MatLab Simulink system simulation model. Volume 3 of the Final Report documents projected fuel savings, a preliminary interface control matrix, a ship installation study, and a technology development plan.
