HyPAq: Software for the Transient Analysis of Hypersonic Vehicles in Abaqus

Abstract

The Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) has embarked upon a research and development program fro air breathing hypersonic vehicles. Part of this program involves the selection and development of software tools useful in the aerothermo-structural design of these vehicles. HyPAq is a hypersonic package for Abaqus - a set of programs and subroutines to be used in conjunction with that particular finite element analysis code. HyPAq interpolates pressures and convective heat fluxes derived from any arbitrary set of CFD results onto Abaqus transient coupled temperature-displacement analyses. This report describes the algorithms which underpin HyPAq and provides an example set of results. The example results are from an analysis which aims to determine a suitable heat-sink material for the nose section of a lifting body undergoing Mach 8 sub-orbital reentry. The complete user guide provided with the HyPAq software distribution is included in an appendix.
