Medical Surveillance Monthly Report (MSMR). Volume 6, Number 4, April 2000

Abstract

This report summarizes frequencies, rates, trends, and the nature of ambulatory visits of active duty soldiers during 1999. Methods. Data were derived from the Defense Medical Surveillance System (DMSS), which contains records of ambulatory visits of US servicemembers at fixed military medical treatment facilities since 1997. For each visit, up to four diagnoses are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, 9th revision, clinical modification (ICD-9-CM). For this summary, illnesses and injuries were grouped based on the first three digits of the ICD-9-CM codes of the primary diagnoses. Ambulatory visits for "factors influencing health status and contact with health services" (codes V01-V82) were excluded.
