Medical Surveillance Monthly Report (MSMR). Volume 1, Number 9, December 1995

Abstract

During the week of 25 September 1995, numerous health complaints were reported by a group of civilian contract employees working at Fort Irwin's Rotational Unit Field Maintenance Area (RUFMA). Some thirty employees were seen by MEDDAC personnel with a variety of symptoms, including headache, burning eyes, and nausea. Initial investigation of the worksite by a contract industrial hygienist failed to reveal any problems. A similar outbreak of symptoms in a separate maintenance area caused Fort Irwin MEDDAC and Preventive Medicine personnel to reassess these work areas. Strong odors led to industrial hygiene measurements that detected low levels of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas in the area of the vehicle wash racks. USACHPPM was asked to assist in the investigation of this problem. USACHPPM deployed a team consisting of three occupational medicine physicians, one industrial hygienist, and one waste water engineer. The three-day investigation completed on 26 October 1995 consisted of worksite walkthroughs, a medical survey questionnaire, industrial hygiene monitoring, and a waste water system investigation.
