UNAMID: A Case Study

Abstract

In 2007, United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1769 established the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID). This mission deployed under the same mandate troops from the United Nations (UN) and the African Union (AU) to support the peace process in Darfur, Sudan. UNAMID is unique among current missions because the UN and the AU share responsibility for the mission`s failure or success. Is UNAMID enough? To answer this question, the author analyzed the role of UNAMID within current political, tactical, and strategic domains. He highlights the strengths and weaknesses of this mission and offers some ideas to improve its performance in the field.
