Sanitization and Disposal of Excess Information Technology Equipment

Abstract

Our audit objective was to determine whether DOD Components sanitized and disposed of excess unclassified information technology (IT) equipment in accordance with Federal and DOD regulations. We also determined whether the Army, Navy, and Air Force properly safeguarded sensitive information on excess unclassified IT equipment by sanitizing and accounting for the equipment before forwarding it to Defense Reutilization and Marketing Service (DRMS) and whether the DRMS disposed of excess IT equipment in accordance with DOD requirements. See Appendix A for a discussion of the scope and methodology and prior coverage related to the objective.
